"Most people do not realize the effect of widespread introduction of exotic species to the environment," said Ken Kehmeier as a senior aquatic biologist Colorado Park and Wildlife through a press release quoted from Thrillist, Tuesday (14/04/2015).
Kehmeier also said that the presence of fish that do not come from this lake could cause damage to native ecosystems that exist around the lake.
"Non-native species can destroy native populations by causing outbreaks of disease and creates an imbalance of competition," he added.
To overcome this, wildlife officials may have to drain the lake to save the native population of the lake. Or even they had to use boats specifically designed to extract the koi fish with electroshocking.
Park spokesman said that the possibility of these fish will end up as fish feed in a rehabilitation center. Park officials also urged the public to refrain from throwing their pet fish in the water for the environment.
